Hee-meh-nah
My name is Jimena Tavel. That’s pronounced Hee-meh-nah — but if it’s easier, feel free to call me Jay. And fun fact, my last name is French, from a wine region near Bordeaux. Cheers!
I was born and raised in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, in Central America. My mom is Costa Rican, and my dad is Cuban. At 17, I moved to the United States for college.
After I graduated from the University of Florida with a journalism degree in 2018, I joined the Miami Herald Media Company. I started out as a reporter and producer for el Nuevo Herald, a Spanish language newspaper, and then moved over to its sister paper, the Miami Herald. Both have served the South Florida community as its newspapers of record for decades.
I currently work as an education reporter for the Miami Herald, covering news about the sixth largest school district in the country, Broward County Public Schools, and the universities in the area, including Florida International University and the University of Miami.
Because I’m fluent in English and Spanish, and hold four nationalities from Costa Rica, Cuba, Honduras and the U.S., I am well-equipped to understand and connect with diverse audiences.
Whether it's crafting compelling copy, telling captivating stories or creating engaging content, my expertise allows me to communicate effectively. And I’d love to help you in any way I can!
